President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed for investigations into the tenure of the immediate past Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Mr. Kwame Owusu as well as his predecessors MyNewsGh.com has confirmed.
A member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) who serves as the Asokwa Constituency Financial Secretary of the party in the Ashanti Region, Paul Kwabena Yandoh in a two-page document requested the office of the President to thoroughly investigate the activities at the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) prior to the assumption of its resigned CEO Kwame Owusu Sekyere and happenings during and after his reigns at the Authority.
The financial guru of the party is of the firm believe that, an in-depth investigation will help balance the present lopsided presentation that may have distorted the true narrative as the tenure of the previous administration saw so much loses to the institution and the country at large with revenue generation in 2016 being GH¢64 million with 72 million in expenditure which meant an 8 million deficit.
In a response from the Office of the President signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, they acknowledged receipt of the petition and lauded the move by their party folk to hold government accountable, encouraging others to do same.
The government promised to award due attention to the content of the petitioner raised and ensure that finality is brought on the matter.
Portions of the letter read “The content of the petition are duly noted and shall receive due attention. The President also commends you for interest in holding government accountable and encourage you in that regard.”
Meanwhile, the former Director-General of the GMA, Kwame Owusu has asked the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah to release the report of an investigation conducted on him over allegation of corruption while in office. The Minister in October 2018 directed the Board of GMA to investigate allegations of impropriety leveled against Mr. Kwame Owusu after it emerged that he in 2017 organized an end-of-year dinner for staff at a cost of GH¢135,123.
He explained that the Authority budgeted for 500 people despite a staff strength of 200 to allow for stakeholders, wives, girlfriends, and dependents.
Again, Mr. Owusu also renovated his two-bedroom official residence and expanded it into a four-bedroom house fitted with 11 air-conditioners all at the cost of GH¢200,000.
He stated when queried over his actions that spending 1 million Ghana cedis to renovate a 2-bedroom house into a four-bedroom house was value for money after a strict auditing of the facility was conducted and that 11 air conditioners as budgeted are even not enough as they were supposed to be 13 arguing further that the current number fixed in his official house is mediocrity and non-reflective of his status as the Maritime Authority boss.
Many Social commentators and civil societies condemned the act and likened it to a waste of state’s resources with an opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team member, Alhaji Halidu Haruna in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com questioned if Mr. Owusu Sekyere was going to run a ‘mortuary service’ in his house.
“ …Why should you even come out to justify your case in such words which will even make issues worse, when we need better explanations . . . 11 air conditions for four bedrooms, why are you going to run mortuary services in the building?” Alhaji Haruna said.
The outcome of the report is yet to be published in the public domain.
