Thousands of people including prominent Chiefs, politicians and Queen Mothers from the Greater Accra Zongo communities and across Ghana on Sunday gathered at Sabon Zongo a suburb of Accra to mark the annual durbar of Chiefs.
The durbar, seeks to bring together Muslim tribal Chiefs as well as traditional leaders from all walks of life was under the leadership of Sarki Dr. Alhaji Yahaya Hamisu Bako.
The colorful and well-organized durbar of chiefs was under the theme: ‘Ensuring Peaceful Elections in December 2024 – The Role of the Youth and Traditional leaders’ offered the opportunity for the Greater Accra Zongo Chief to engage the youth on the need to promote before, during and after the December election.
Cultural performances from various tribes were also showcased at the durbar which signifies the unity and peaceful coexistence among the tribes within the Zongo communities in Ghana.
As part of the celebration, sub-chiefs from various tribes living in the Zongo communities formed a procession from the Abossey Okai Central Mosque through the principal street of Sabon Zongo to the Durbar grounds to pay homage to the Greater Accra Zongo Chief and the invited guests.
The procession was filled with drumming, brass band display and horse riding.
Speaking with the media in an interview on the sideline of the durbar, the Chairman of the Greater Accra durbar committee, Alhaji Abdul Jalil Abubakar called on the youth to make peace their topmost priority ahead of the December polls.
He urged the youth to consider children and women before perpetuating any form of violence before, during and after the elections adding that children and women suffer most during any conflict.
He said there is the need to promote peace and say no to political or any form of violence in the country.
He advised fellow youth not to allow themselves to be used as tools for political violence and urged them to be bold and reject any offer from politicians who may come to them to commit crime.
The Development Queen Mother of Osu Ashante Manye Naa Odofeley Wornor I who was represented by Sherifatu Abdulahi used the opportunity to to call on mothers to advise their children on the need to promote peace.
According to her, mothers have some huge influence on their children; hence the need for mothers to add their voices to the call for peace before, during and after the December elections.
She revealed that most of the politicians have enrolled their children in Universities abroad to become better persons but turned around to use the ordinary Ghanaian youth during elections for their political gains.
She therefore called on mothers to advise their children not to engage in any form of violence to the benefits of the politician.
Manye Naa Odofeley Wornor I donated an amount of 500 Ghana Cedis for the construction of Madrases (Islamic School Projects) in Sabon Zongo Accra.
